Hair, skin and nails…the three go hand in hand in terms of target areas we’re constantly trying to boost and perfect! Let’s be honest, most of us spend a lot of money trying out copious amounts of products in the hope to find one that really works. With endless super supplements and miracle shampoos on the market promising to grow your hair and turn you into a rapunzel overnight, with photo-shopped skin and killer nails, its hard to know which ingredients actually deliver results we want to invest in!
After extensive research, picking various nutritionists’ brains and testing out many of the big branded supplements over the last 6 months, we’re excited to reveal our verdict. We believe that many of the ingredients included in the typical ‘hair, skin and nails’ supplements simply don’t work. Ingredients in the said ‘all-in-one’ supplements are mostly cheap and include stuff that doesn’t make a blind bit of difference to the growth of our hair, appearance of our skin and strength of our nails.
We honestly believe that some of these brands include fancy words on their packaging that we can’t pronounce and have never heard of, and they are more than likely added to blind us into thinking they work wonders! Obviously we’re not for one minute saying that every single supplement on the market doesn’t work, we’re just asking you to be wise and research the ingredient lists on anything you invest in as from our research more often than not, the ingredients have no medical evidence to prove they help the hair, skin and nails.
So, onto the interesting bit! The ingredient that has impressed us, and the one that a lot of other people out there swear by is Biotin! Call it the magic nutrient for hair, skin and nails.
WHAT IS BIOTIN?
Biotin, also known as vitamin H is one of the B complex vitamins that help the body convert food into energy.
Biotin helps keep the skin, hair, eyes, liver and nervous system healthy and is also a crucial nutrient for pregnancy as its good for embryonic growth. So with all of this in mind you can probably start to see that Biotin is kind of a big deal and is why we’re so interested in it over at TLL HQ! That and the fact that taking it daily for the last 6 months has helped our beauty editor’s hair growth speed up (after having her hair cut into a drastic bob) improved the appearance of her skin and even made her nails substantially stronger- albeit she’s also given up on her shellac addiction too!
Most of us get our biotin fix from eating a healthy diet from foods such as egg yolks, nuts, spinach, salmon and leafy greens and it’s also produced in our bodies from intestinal bacteria. But for those of us who don’t get enough biotin from diet alone can suffer from a deficiency in biotin.
When a deficiency in biotin happens symptoms of hair loss, scaly red rash and acne can occur which understandably causes severe unhappiness and even depression.
There have been a lot of contradictions in the press about how effective increasing your biotin levels are on the hair, skin and nails but the National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that there is sufficient data to support recommending supplementation of biotin and with proof of our own we’re all for taking biotin supplements for the health of our hair, skin and nails regardless to whether you get enough through your diet alone. Our beauty editor has been taking one 10,00mcg tablet per day, and she started to see results after 2/3 months of taking Biotin supplements.
