5 Top Tips For Protecting Your Skin In The Sun
Show your skin some love this summer, with expert advice on sun protection
Skincare is very important all year round, but especially in the summer months. Whatever your skin type, we are all susceptible to sun damage; everything from prickly heat, sunburn and rashes, so here are Lorena’s top tips for staying safe in the sun:
Drink water
Ensure you drink enough water; your body loses lots of moisture in the summer months and it is easy to become dehydrated.
Use sun protection correctly
The power of the sun is often underestimated. Whatever you skin tone, Lorena recommends applying sunscreen – a minimum of factor 30 – at least 30 minutes before stepping out and, if you are out in the sun for more than a few hours, ensure you top up.
People often mix tanning oil with sunscreen. Lorena urges us not to do this! The key ingredients in the tanning oils will interact with the sunscreen and make it ineffective. Also, avoid any tanning oils that contain SPF.
If you are suffering from prickly heat or irritated skin, perhaps as a result of incorrectly using sunscreen, try applying natural yoghurt over the affected area for approximately 15 minutes, then pat dry with cold water – do not rub, this is worst thing you can do!
Exfoliate
It is important to exfoliate your skin in the summer to remove dead skin cells and improve blood circulation. If you don’t get rid of these cells, they’ll just sit on your skin and cause issues. Not only will your skin appear dull, but the build-up of dirt and moisture will cause irritation and spots – the last thing you need on holiday when minimal make-up is desired!
Use natural oils
Try applying pure natural oils on your face and body at night to give your skin extra conditioning. Oils are highly effective at moisturising and soothing the skin, particularly in the summer months when your skin has been exposed to the sun and may be suffering the effects of heat, as well as heat rash. Natural oils can also help even out skin tone and colour.
Cleanse
Don’t forget to cleanse to keep pores clean and clear. If you do not have a good cleansing regime, blocked pores and breakouts are inevitable.
