When we found out organic wine had far less impact on our health than your average bottle of wine we were keen to hear more.
First things first, what is in your favourite bottle of wine..
Wine is fermented grape juice, but it is not that simple. Although wine labels indicate alcohol strength, country of origin or grape variety, they don’t say anything about preservatives, additives, sugars or pesticides. So it is hard to track what is really in your favourite glass. However going organic means you reduce all of these nasties and so much more! 1. Organic wine is pesticide, herbicide and fungicide free
Grapes accumulate residual pesticides, herbicides and fungicides more than most other fruits due to their large surface area. Unlike organic wine producers, big mass market companies spray the vineyards to protect from disease and these toxic chemicals will be present in your evening glass of wine.
2. Reduce allergies and intolerances by skipping the sulphites
When grapes are harvested on a large scale it is done by machines, which can lead to the grapes being torn, damaged and the juice becoming oxidised. To counteract this damage the producer will then inject the wine with lots of excessive sulphites to preserve and stabilise the wine and mask the flaws.
Sulphites are harmful to our heath and they also cause allergies and various intolerances. With an estimated 4 in 10 people in the UK suffering from allergies the figures all point to the benefits of consuming less sulphites.
3. Organic wines are richer in nutrients and antioxidants
Organic and natural wines that are made with no added sulphites are richer in nutrients and antioxidants with no harmful pesticide residue. So there could actually health benefits from drinking organic wine….
4. Skip the hangover headache
Excessive sulphites are the main cause of that much dreaded hangover headache. So a simple move to drinking organic wines made by artisan producers and family run wineries, who use less sulphites than the mass producers, will mean that you might even be able to have an extra glass and still be on form at work the next day.
