Any mother who’s tried to book an indulgent facial, pedicure or massage to treat their teenage daughter will know just how difficult it can be finding a spa or salon that caters to the under-18 age group. Happily, beauty meccas are quickly cottoning on to the growing demand for adolescent-centric treatments, from express manis to lash extensions, and we’ve rounded up the most relaxing and indulgent choices for aspiring beauty addicts…
Ask any hormonal teenager what they deem their key problem area, and complexion will likely come the reply. Pesky spots are a stubborn skin complaint that sometimes demand more than a swipe of witch hazel and tee tree oil. Daniel Hersheson’s Harvey Nichols salon is one of the few salons offering full length facials to those aged 15 years plus, to whom they recommend the Skin Ceuticals Deep Pore Cleansing Facial (the deep pre-cleansing treatment clears congestion, and a tailored blend of products reduces oil production while helping to heal and calm troubled skin). As you would expect from the first spa chain to create a skincare range specifically for teen skin (Fresh Skin), Elemis Brand have a comprehensive selection of treatments for those ages 12-17. One of the most popular is the Can You Pick Me Up facial – a cleanse, tone and exfoliation followed by expert advice on a healthy skin regime. Available at selected Elemis salons.
Wow Factor Eyes
There are multiple salons comfortable to lash tint and brow tidy preened teens, but none offer the comprehensive at-home service of Perfect 10 – a mobile service that delivers the finest, carefully vetted beauticians to your door. An industry-insiders favourite, this is an easy to book and efficient choice for birthday bashes (or even teenage girls who are still a little intimidated by the adult-only feel of many spas). The menu covers everything from makeovers to blow dries, but why not opt for the golden trinity of eyes: threading, tinting and ultra-natural lash extensions? Unusually, no adult is required to be present – so watch out for spur of the moment ‘perfect add ons’! Teens looking for a fuller flutter should try Lash Perfect Lash Bar’s Express Lashes, a speedy technique where individual lashes are placed on the upper line, then removed after two weeks to ensure there’s no damage to the natural lash cycle.
Mother and Daughter Pampering
Far too few spas are offering the ultimate girlie getaway: the mother and daughter spa break. Lucknam Park, however is flying the flag for generational indulgence with their Little Miss and I Escape (available Sun-Thurs), an overnight stay designed to calm frazzled mums (who can unwind with an express facial, mini manicure and pedicure), and indulge beauty-loving daughters (who can look forward to a visage facial, mini manicure and pedicure). The overnight stay also includes a hearty Wiltshire breakfast and Brasserie dining. At the Runnymede-on-Thames Spa, the Mum and Teen Pamper Experience offers a Zen-like half day of beauty bonding which includes refreshments, a luxurious 25-minute treatment of choice, and full use of the spa facilities (from 3pm-7pm).
While many spas and salons offer manicures for the 14 to 17 year-old age bracket (Cowshed’s Speedy Manicure supplies a quick flash file, tidy and polish), it’s Nails Inc. who surely have the most purse-friendly service. Their ongoing ‘pay your age’ promotion means an expert file and lacquer will cost those twenty years and under their age in pounds.
Ouch-Free Hair Removal
Any type of electronic hair removal is strictly out of bounds for teenagers, but there are plenty of salons and spas whose waxing menu is available to 16 year olds (though an adult must be present and bikini waxes are off limits). House of wax (a favourite with Londoners for its super-friendly female therapists and pain free services) is one such hair removal mecca, the perfect place for leg hair removal (the most common choice for most teens, apparently). Those 14 years and over can also book in for their first de-fuzzing at Dove Spas.
Blissful Body Massage
Most therapists will not perform any detox-centric treatments on teens, believing that their youthful bodies do not yet need detoxing (many believe it could actually prove harmful). However, a number of spas will consider carrying out mini massages, particularly of the shoulder area (see Elemis’ Dee-Stress, a tension-busting shoulder massage and body brush, followed by a warm algae mask, ideal for post exam stress). If you’re looking to book a body treatment for your offspring that’s as natural as possible, try Aromatherapy Associates’ Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience (from age 15 years). Young ladies can choose from 12 award-winning essential oil blends and enjoy this hero ritual, designed to gently remove any tension and leave them feeling uplifted (and no doubt ready for a spot of shopping in nearby Covent Garden).
Margaret Dabbs’ Medical Pedicure is the gold standard of foot treatments. Despite its slightly clinical title, this is a treatment suitable for those aged 14 years and older, and is a seriously effective-yet-indulgent way to smoother soles and revitalised nails. Performed by trained podiatrists, the pedicure starts with the safe surgical removal of all dry skin and finishes with the shaping and buffing of nails, followed by deep mositurisation using rich emu oil.
